Premier Boxing Champions confirmed the former unified welterweight world champion will face Tim Tszyu on July 25 in a 154-pound super welterweight clash, broadcast live on PBC Pay-Per-View via Amazon Prime Video.
The specific Australian venue is yet to be announced, with promoters indicating a location confirmation is weeks away.
For Tszyu, fighting where no member of his family has ever lost, the occasion is already loaded with meaning. He called it "one of the biggest fights in Australian boxing history."
Spence's Long Road Back to the Ring
Spence, 36, last stepped through the ropes in July 2023, when Terence Crawford stopped him in the ninth round of their undisputed welterweight title fight in Las Vegas. It was a one-sided night that ended his run as one of the sport's best.
At his peak the Texan had held the IBF and WBC belts simultaneously and was regarded as a pound-for-pound top-10 fighter.
He carries a record of 28-1 with 22 knockouts into this bout, having since parted with longtime trainer Derrick James and linked up with Ronnie Shields.
Spence is fully aware of how much he has to prove.
"I'm sure everybody has their reserved opinions, thinking I'm a shell of myself," he said at the face-to-face press conference confirming the fight, "but I guarantee you come July 26, you will see a better, more improved Errol Spence."
He was equally direct about the challenge ahead: "I'm coming to conquer his country." Shields backed his fighter: "We feel comfortable going to Australia to get this thing done."
Tszyu Looks to Rebuild on Home Turf
The 31-year-old Sydney fighter arrives having lost three of his last five bouts, including two by knockout, though he has since rebuilt with wins over lower-ranked opposition.
He also made a deliberate change in his corner ahead of this fight, parting ways with his previous trainer to work with Australian boxing icon Jeff Fenech. Tszyu frames this as central to his comeback.
Tszyu was blunt about his motivation. "I accepted because I knew that victory is only on my mind," he said. "I'm coming for it all."
He also pointed to his family's undefeated record of 55-0 on Australian soil as a source of confidence. He holds a record of 27-3 with 18 knockouts, and a win over a former pound-for-pound rated world champion would be the statement result he needs to return to title contention at 154 pounds.
Promoter Matt Rose of No Limit Boxing said the bout "was easy to make in terms of Tim wanting to fight Errol" and described it as a landmark moment for Australian boxing.
Current WBC super welterweight champion Sebastian Fundora, who has previously defeated Tszyu, sits as the most prominent title target for whoever wins.
The card runs on the night of Saturday July 25 in Australia, carrying into the early hours of Sunday July 26 AEST to suit prime-time US audiences on Prime Video. Check the latest boxing betting odds ahead of fight night.
