Adelaide Crows vs Gold Coast Suns Prediction - Round 18 2026

09/07/2026|Josh Jenkins|AFL Tips & Predictions

The Western Bulldogs return home to Marvel Stadium this Sunday with a simple job in front of them: stop the bleeding and remind everyone why they’ve spent most of the season entrenched in the top eight.

It has been a stop-start few weeks for Luke Beveridge's men, who were never in the fight against Sydney last Friday as Charlie Curnow ran amok in a 35-point defeat.

That loss dropped the Dogs to eighth on the ladder, still within a game of the top six, but with a percentage that badly needs topping up if they want to avoid a slide into the wildcard scrap.

Enter West Coast, who arrive at Marvel Stadium having lost 11 straight matches at the venue and coming off a spirited but ultimately unsuccessful shootout against Adelaide.

There were genuine signs of life from Andrew McQualter's side in Perth. Harley Reid continues to look like a genuine superstar in the making, mid-season recruit Oliver Francou has slotted in seamlessly, and Jake Waterman is booting goals for fun even if his accuracy has cost the Eagles dearly at times.

The bigger problem is the ledger. West Coast have played just four matches this year against sides currently sitting outside the top ten, and the Bulldogs have won every single one of them, often by outrageous margins.

With Sam Darcy sidelined for the season and Nicholas Coffield and Connor Budarick also on the sidelines, the Dogs are hardly at full strength either, but they still boast far more class through the middle and up forward than West Coast can currently match.

Western Bulldogs vs West Coast Eagles Prediction and Betting Tips

Head-to-Head Prediction

The Bulldogs have had one of the toughest draws in the competition this season, so a clash against a side currently outside the top ten is a rare luxury, and they have made the most of every previous opportunity in 2026.

West Coast, on the other hand, continue to show glimpses of real improvement without the results to match. Their fightback against Adelaide was built on effort and ball movement rather than polish, and Harley Reid's numbers keep climbing even if his conversion in front of goal does not.

Brady Hough looms as the man tasked with curbing Marcus Bontempelli, and on recent form that assignment has not gone his way. The Bulldogs skipper has had the better of most match-ups thrown at him over the past fortnight, and a home deck at Marvel Stadium should only help his cause.

West Coast's away form remains the elephant in the room. Eleven straight losses at this venue is a brutal statistic, and it is hard to see an Eagles outfit missing several key defenders finding a way to end that run against a Bulldogs side desperate to keep its top six hopes alive.

Expect the Dogs to assert control through the middle and turn a competitive contest into a comfortable margin by the final siren.

Head-to-head prediction: Western Bulldogs by 28 points.

First Goal Scorer Prediction

With so much of the pre-match chatter centred on the Dogs and the starpower of Bontempelli, Jake Waterman is the sort of player who could easily open the scoring while everyone else is watching the midfield battle.

The Eagles forward has been in career-best form in front of goal this year, even if his conversion rate has let him down in bursts, and he thrives when West Coast look to hit him early and often on the lead.

If the Eagles want any chance of arresting their horror run at Marvel Stadium, getting Waterman involved from the opening bounce is the obvious starting point.

Betting tip: Jake Waterman.

Most Disposals Prediction

Marcus Bontempelli remains the most damaging on-baller in the competition when he is fit and firing, and he looks set to enjoy plenty of it against a West Coast midfield still finding its feet at AFL level.

The skipper has strung together a run of dominant home performances this season, regularly racking up 30-plus touches while also providing scoreboard impact of his own.

Facing a West Coast engine room built around youth and inexperience, expect Bontempelli to control the corridor and finish comfortably on top of the disposal count.

Betting tip: Marcus Bontempelli.
