Western Bulldogs vs GWS Giants Prediction - Round 1 2026

12/03/2026|Josh Jenkins|AFL Tips & Predictions

Round 1 of the AFL’s 2026 season sees another chapter in one of the competition’s newest, yet fiercest rivalries. These two clubs do not like each other.

With both teams securing an Opening Round win to start season 2026, the Western Bulldogs and GWS Giants will continue their rivalry at Marvel Stadium in a Saturday afternoon clash.

The Bulldogs secured arguably the most impressive victory of the Opening Round, pulling off a stunning heist at the Gabba by coming from 26 points down to defeat the reigning premiers 111-106.

Meanwhile, GWS silenced the doubters by putting aside a lengthy injury list to dismantle Hawthorn 122-95, fuelled by a vintage performance from Jake Stringer and a dominant club debut from Clayton Oliver.

The Western Bulldogs have historically held the wood over the Giants, winning nine of their last 10 encounters. This includes a 132-44 demolition at this very venue late last season where Aaron Naughton and Sam Darcy combined for 10 goals.

With both sides coming off confidence-boosting wins, this matchup serves as an early season indicator of which team will be around at the pointy end of the season.

Toby Greene claims that he’s done with suspension and will be on his best behaviour in 2026.

This claim will be put to the test when he comes up against his old rival Marcus Bontempelli.

Will the Dogs be able to get under Greene’s skin again? Or did these two club captains squash their beef playing for Victoria in AFL’s Origin Series?

Western Bulldogs vs GWS Giants Prediction and Betting Tips

Head-to-Head Prediction

These two faced off last back in round 21 last season as GWS were getting ready for their finals run the Dogs had their season on the line.

The Dogs showed no mercy and annihilated the men in orange by an 88-point margin. GWS won’t have forgotten this result and will have revenge on their minds.

GWS do have genuine health queries already, Brent Daniels and Sam Taylor are still missing. The loss of superstar midfielder Tom Green for the remainder of the season is also a massive blow.

GWS flexed their muscles in their demolition of the Hawks last week.

However, the Bulldogs' depth, performance against Brisbane and recent dominance in this head-to-head make them very hard to tip against under the roof.

Head-to-head prediction: Bulldogs by 23 points.

First Goal Scorer Prediction

Aaron Naughton has a penchant for tormenting the Giants at Marvel Stadium, evidenced by his five-goal haul against them last year.

With Sam Taylor still sidelined with a hamstring injury from the GWS defence, Naughton should find plenty of space early to lead the charge and slot the first major of the afternoon.

Betting tip: Aaron Naughton.

Most Disposals Prediction

Bulldogs midfielder Ed Richards is currently playing the best football of his career. Coming off a 30-disposal masterclass against the Lions where he gained over 700 metres, he is the primary distributor for the Bulldogs.

Expect him to rack up massive numbers again as he exploits the fast track at Docklands.

Betting tip: Ed Richards.
