Western Bulldogs vs Essendon Prediction - Round 4 2026

03/04/2026|Josh Jenkins|AFL Tips & Predictions

AFL Season 2026 Round 4 sees the Essendon Bombers voluntarily walking into a pit of despair as they face off against the Bulldogs for the EJ Whitten Cup.

Well rested and seemingly at the peak of their powers, a one-sided contest will be anticipated when the Western Bulldogs host Essendon at Marvel Stadium on Easter Sunday.

The Bombers are enduring a miserable start to 2026, having been repeatedly exposed defensively on their way to a 0-3 record.

Last week’s 81-69 loss to North Melbourne followed a familiar pattern as Essendon allowed the opposition to easily move from end-to-end, before leaving its run too late.

Making matters worse, the Bombers will be heading into this clash without young forward Nate Caddy, who has been sidelined due to concussion.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs have won three straight against quality opposition and will benefit from their bye, although they have a significant hole to fill in the middle with star midfielder Tom Liberatore unavailable due to a hamstring injury.

The Bulldogs embarrassed Essendon twice last year, winning by 91 and 93 points respectively. And the Dogs have seemingly improved a lot this season.

This could get ugly.

Western Bulldogs vs Essendon Match Predictions and Betting Tips

Head-to-Head Prediction

Oh, boy. It’s hard to imagine quite what the margin here could end up being. The Dogs have a history of hammering lowly opponents under the roof and Essendon well and truly meets that criteria.

It’ll either be a very long season or a very short season for Bombers coach Brad Scott, a big loss here could tip that towards the latter.

Footy can be a crazy game sometimes and anything can happen, but it seems all but certain that the Dogs will win and win well.

The Bulldogs' depth and recent dominance in this head-to-head make them impossible to tip against at Marvel Stadium. It’s just about how much fight the Bombers can and wish to provide to stem the bleeding.

Head-to-head prediction: Western Bulldogs by 99 points.

First Goal Scorer Prediction

Aaron Naughton loves a big stage under the roof at Marvel Stadium, and he has a particular penchant for tormenting the Bombers.

The big unit is fourth on the Coleman Medal leaderboard at this stage in the team and he’d be looking at this matchup as a big opportunity to add to his tally.

Expect the Dogs to look for Naughton early, he’ll be scoring early and often throughout this contest unless the Bombers can pull off a miracle.

Betting tip: Aaron Naughton.

Most Disposals Prediction

Ed Richards is currently playing the best football of his career and has become a primary distributor for the Bulldogs' midfield.

With Tom Liberatore sidelined, Richards will shoulder even more of the load in transition.

Expect him to exploit the space allowed by Essendon's defensive lapses and rack up a huge disposal count.

A toss-up between him and Bont for most disposals in this one.

Betting tip: Ed Richards.
