Sydney Swans vs Brisbane Lions Prediction - Round 1 2026

12/03/2026|Josh Jenkins|AFL Tips & Predictions

Coming off opposite results during the Opening Round, Sydney and Brisbane will face off in Round 1 at the SCG on Saturday night.

Sydney flexed its muscles against Carlton, putting together an incredible 75-26 third term which marked the most points any side has totalled in a quarter since 2011.

Justin McInerney was impressive, while new recruit Charlie Curnow slotted three majors in his club-debut. Elsewhere, Brisbane gave up a 26-point third-quarter lead to fall 111-106 against the Bulldogs at the Gabba.

The depleted Brisbane team have their backs against the wall already in Round 1, with a host of Lions missing from the pride.

Things have since gone from bad to worse for the two-time reigning premiers, with Hugh McCluggage ruled out by a calf injury, while Harris Andrews, Zac Bailey and Darcy Gardiner have been handed suspensions.

These rivals played out some classic matches last year, seeing Brisbane triumph 86-82 at the SCG in Round 1 and Sydney win 92-90 at the Gabba during Round 22.

It’s NSW vs QLD, Brisbane vs Sydney at the SCG as these old rivals come head to head once again.

Sydney Swans vs Brisbane Lions Prediction and Betting Tips

Head-to-Head Prediction

With the Lions missing some stars in round 1 due to injury and MRO, the pressure is on their experienced men to step up.

They were excellent for the most part in the Opening Round, but the Dogs were on a mission and proved too good in the dying stages.

Charlie Cameron’s last three games have been superb, and he’s been slotting goals from everywhere. Four in the Grand Final, three in Origin and four last week.

Sydney on the other hand were slow starters against the Blues, with a dour first half, followed by a third-quarter demolition of Carlton.

Heeney, Warner, and Gulden bursting from contest is a terrifying proposition for any footy side.

Ryan Lester will likely cop the job of tagging Curnow with Andrews suspended for getting overzealous and striking Dogs forward Arty Jones.

The Lions were unsuccessful in avoiding the charge against Harris Andrews and he will be sitting out for the next three matches.

With key bodies down, Sydney looks likely to get revenge for the corresponding match last season, which saw the Lions steal four points at the death.

It’s hard to wager against the back-to-back defending premiers, but this early in the season, the Lions won’t be bringing their September form.

Head-to-head prediction: Swans by 11 points.

First Goal Scorer Prediction

Charlie Curnow made an immediate impact in his club debut last week and looks right at home in the Harbour City.

Without the influence of Harris Andrews, the Lions will struggle to contain the Swans marquee signing.

Expect Sydney to feed Curnow early and ignite the SCG crowd, he’s a strong nod in for the first major in this contest.

Betting tip: Charlie Curnow.

Most Disposals Prediction

Will Ashcroft has hit the ground running in 2026 and continues to show why he's the future of the Lions club.

With Hugh McCluggage sidelined, even more of the ball-winning responsibility falls on Ashcroft’s shoulders.

The two-time Norm Smith medallist will compete for everything and rack up a massive tally in Sydney.

We’re backing him to be thereabouts as Brisbane compete for the footy against this slick Swans outfit.

Betting tip: Will Ashcroft.
