AFL Tips & Predictions – Round 14

14/06/2024|Josh Jenkins|AFL Tips & Predictions

Brisbane and Hawthorn said don’t forget about us whilst Collingwood and Carlton emerged as the chasing pack trying to keep pace with all-conquering Sydney.

They were the highlights last week, alongside the gigantic day that is King’s Birthday footy - where Aussie sporting greats all went down the slide and into the ice in the name of the great Neale Daniher and Fight MND.

AFL round 14 sees six squads take their mid-season break (CARL, ESS, GEE, GC, MEL, WCE) whilst we lose Thursday night footy for the remainder of the regular season.

While we’re sad to see it go for another year, we still have a handful of intriguing games for us to dive into.

For the latest analysis, news, odds and betting tips for all of this week’s action, check out my AFL round 14 tips and predictions below, or follow me on the feed and see them there!

Brisbane Lions vs St Kilda Prediction

Friday, June 14, 7:40pm AEST – The Gabba

The Saints jump into AFL round 14 on a two-game win streak but all in sundry are querying the quality of those wins and the sustainability of their game style. They have averaged just 70 points this season.

The Lions went down to Melbourne and took care of the Dogs under the lid with Eric Hipwood dominating inside fifty and Harris Andrews dominating down back.

Between the arcs, dual Brownlow Medallist, Lachie Neale, roamed freely and without opposition as he collected 38 touches and kicked 2 goals.

The Saints may aim to slow down the Lions at the Gabba but scoring 80+ might be needed to compete for victory.

Marcus Windhager took Took Miller out of the game last week and he quelled Harley Reid before that, so expect to see the young Saint stand side-by-side with Neale - so we’ll avoid Lachie in our SGM.

The Lions have a dismal home record this season in comparison to years gone by but this looms as their chance to truly begin their run at the top eight.

H2H tip: Brisbane Lions by 24 points.

Best bet: SGM – Lions 1-39, McCluggage 25+ & Zac Bailey 2+ goals.

Western Bulldogs vs Fremantle Prediction

Saturday, June 15, 1:45pm AEST – Marvel Stadium

This will be a sneaky good game early on Saturday afternoon. The Dockers travel well, particularly to Marvel Stadium, whilst we know the Dogs will be keen on a bounce back after going down at home to the Lions last week in primetime.

Jordan Clark is turning into an All-Australian defender who runs and guns and gives life to this Freo attack. Josh Treacy has been the major benefactor to the faster ball movement whilst Jye Amiss showed signs of life against the Dees in the Alice.

Both on-ball groups are accumulators — Serong, Brayshaw, Fyfe v Macrae, Liberatore, Treloar — but Bontempelli and Hayden Young are the two guys who add the point of difference for their respective squads.

Young may go and stand alongside The Bont and that contest will define this overall clash.

A Dockers’ win establishes them inside the top eight, whilst a Dogs’ win keeps them in touch.

I’m on board the Purple Train, seeing is believing and I’ve loved the growth from Clark, Treacy, Young, Sharp out on the wing and Action Luke Jackson.

H2H tip: Fremantle Dockers by 14 points.

Best bet: Luke Jackson 2+ goals.

Richmond vs Hawthorn Prediction

Saturday, June 15, 4:35pm AEST – MCG

A monster crowd will assemble to celebrate the greatness of Dustin Martin in game 300.

And I’ll tell you what - a fair few Hawks fans will sneak in with the expectation of another win.

The form ladder has Hawthorn among the better performed teams. They’re 6-4 in their past 10, which should be 7-3 if not for a cough-up in Adelaide against the Power.

Big Mabior Chol deserves some love - in similar fashion to Eric Hipwood. Most expected Chol’s Hawks career to be sporadic but his athletic prowess and elite finishing is allowing him to perform as the team’s No. 1 key forward in Mitch Lewis’s absence.

Sam Frost and James Sicily will stand alongside Dusty when he’s playing one-out in the fifty. Any sign of a Dusty moment will see 75,000 Richmond fans explode with excitement.

But despite the fanfare for the greatest ever Tiger, you’d expect the high-flying Hawks to roll along and get closer and closer to the top 8.

H2H tip: Hawthorn by 21 points.

Best bet: Jack Ginnivan 2+ goals.

Adelaide Crows vs Sydney Swans Prediction

Saturday, June 15, 7:30pm AEST – Adelaide Oval

Just as you thought Adelaide’s season could not get much worse, here come the Swans.

Sydney exploded and dropped 11 goals to six in the second half against Geelong last Sunday, with the goals coming from everywhere.

Papley bagged four, Amartey keeps kicking goals and the gun midfielders - Gulden, Heeney and Warner - combined for another five.

Brodie Grundy dominated the contest as well with 24 disposals and 11 score involvements. He’s an Adelaide boy and will be keen to keep on charging toward a third All-Australian blazer.

The midfield mismatch is obvious, so what can Matthew Nicks do to offset the talent disparity? Heeney, Gulden, Rowbottom and Warner against an out-of-favour Laird, a fatiguing Soligo and newcomers to the midfield could see the key metrics heavily in favour of the Sydneysiders.

H2H tip: Sydney Swans by 31 points.

Best bet: SGM – Heeney 25+ disposals, Gulden 25+ disposals & Amartey 2+ goals.

North Melbourne vs Collingwood Prediction

Sunday, June 16, 1:00pm AEST – Marvel Stadium

No Pendlebury, no Mihocek, no Elliott, no De Goey - no worries.

Collingwood are absolutely a contender to the 2024 crown. Make no mistake.

Their form since beginning the season 0-3 has been as good as anyone not named Sydney. The growth from Harrison, Macrae, Kruger and Sullivan could see them become even deeper once the big guns return.

The Roos got their maiden win of 2024 and good for them. Big Nick Larkey looked sensational, and it was good to see co-captain Jy Simpkin back in sparkling form.

This game being at Marvel Stadium, rather than the MCG, favours the Roos but I’d think the Roos need more than a favourable home ground advantage to get past these charging ‘Pies.

H2H tip: Collingwood by 27 points.

Best bet: Lachie Shultz 3+ goals.

GWS Giants vs Port Adelaide Prediction

Sunday, June 16, 4:00pm AEST – Sydney Showground Stadium

Now, what do we have here!? Not many will care about the final game of AFL round 14 on face value but it’s a fascinating clash in regards to the reputation of both squads.

The Giants cannot get back to anything resembling their early season form. They’re 5-5 in their past 10 after exploding out of the gates.

Meanwhile, the Power are basically a 50/50 squad across the past 10 weeks aside from a freak late-game win over the Hawks.

A Power victory keeps them entrenched in the top four which demands respect. A GWS loss will see them losing touch with the top eight.

4pm at Giants Stadium with two interstate squads is hardly box-office TV but this will be one proper footy fans will not be missing!

H2H tip: GWS Giants by 14 points.

Best bet: Finn Callaghan 25+ disposals.

AFL 2024 Premiership Odds
