Winter is here! And so are we for another week of AFL Tips & Predictions for Round 13!

Last week threw up a few surprises in what was an all-round dim week for the Huddle’s loyal and vast AFL followers.

The depleted Bombers pushed the Lions all the way. The Pies wiped the floor with the Hawks, and the Dockers went across the country and got the choccies against the Gold Coast in a slog in what was one of the performances of the season.

The gap between the contenders and the rest continues to get bigger. Although Hawthorn now finds themselves at risk of falling out of the top eight after being spruiked as the team that everyone would be chasing in 2025.

It makes Thursday night for them rather large as they kick off the round with a mouthwatering clash against the Dogs under the lid. We’re down the highway at the Cattery for the game of the round, heading to Bunbury before a pair of blockbusters at the MCG to end the round.

Of course, it’s Kings Birthday weekend which gives us the annual ‘Big Freeze’ and massive Melbourne and Collingwood clash in what’s set to be another massive day at the G.

Let’s crack on with Round 13.

Western Bulldogs vs Hawthorn Prediction

Thursday, June 5, 7:30pm AEST - Marvel Stadium

Is it panic stations at Waverley yet?

The Hawks were comprehensively smashed against the Pies on Friday night, and it left Sammy Mitchell a bit to ponder both at how they are playing and at the selection table.

Their run and dare from the back half is gone and teams have gone to work on ‘HokBall’. Their skipper James Sicily is in a serious rut too and it reverberates through his whole team.

Now the Hawks need to reinvent themselves.

Their toughness has gone, losing the tackle count by -44 to Collingwood and -23 to Brisbane the previous weeks. Teams are starting to walk through them.

It’s a long list of names that need to rediscover some form. Sicily, Moore, D’Ambrosio, Morrison, Meek, and recruits Battle and Barrass are among those down on their best.

Conor Nash likely goes to Dogs skipper Marcus Bontempelli whilst Ed Richards and Jai Newcombe will be an enjoyable clash.

The winner claims a comfortable place back inside the eight whilst the loser will be left to answer a few questions on their credibility.

The Dogs should be well rested coming off the bye. They will be boosted too by the inclusion of Adam Treloar… just to give Sam Mitchell another headache.

Head-to-head prediction: Hawks by 11 points

Betting tip: Jack Gunston 2+ goals

Adelaide vs Brisbane Lions Prediction

Friday, June 6, 7:40pm AEST - Adelaide Oval

A rare primetime fixture for the showtime Crows. Credit to the AFL! (they don’t seem to be getting much lately)

This fixture last year was when both teams were just going. Now, the Crows are absolutely flying and the Lions, despite being second on the ladder and falling over the line against the Bombers last week, are still just going.

I expect this fixture to bring out the best in the Lions though. Just like their clash against the Hawks at the MCG did a fortnight ago.

There’s still some people questioning whether their three-pronged tall forward line will work, but the exposed form and evidence of half a season is that Fogarty, Tex, and the Thrillseeker are causing defenders all sorts of problems, but will have their work cut out for them against Harris Andrews and Jack Payne.

And that’s before you throw in the smalls brigade that run amok every week, combining for another seven goals against the listless Swans.

We’ll throw some love to their backline too. They’re second for points against and are taking names this season, looking to add Hipwood and Logan Morris to their growing list of victims.

A packed house at Adelaide Oval is expected here. It’s another game where the Crows are going to have to prove their bona fides as a serious player this season.

Head-to-head prediction: Lions by 13 points

Richmond vs Sydney Prediction

Saturday, June 7, 1:20pm AEST - MCG

When the fixture makers dropped this one, both these teams looked miles apart.

Sydney was likely in pursuit of a third Grand Final in four seasons whilst some predicted the Tiger Cubs would struggle to win a game.

Three months in and Sydney’s fortunes have nose-dived. Last week’s loss to Adelaide at home was a killer blow on an already shaky season.

It was a painful lesson for the young cubs last week.

They had that game won… they even kept the Giants to 80 points or under which has been Adem Yze’s magic number this year! But it wasn’t to be.

But you’d be loving the fight if you were a Tigers fan, and you’d be turning up to the MCG on Saturday knowing that if they bring that same effort, maybe fix up their goalkicking a touch, and there's a chance to secure another win here against the Swans.

The Swans were rightfully labeled a ‘Rabble’ by Crows defender Wayne Milera last Saturday night. What they dished up was horrific. Barely believable from a Swans side as life under Dean Cox goes from bad to worse.

The Swans are still reliant on too few, but even then can only do so much. Chad Warner had 12 clearances on his own against the Crows from his 19 disposals but kicked at an awful 12.5% for the match.

The Tigers surprised everyone by pinching this game last year against the eventual Grand Finalists and it stood out like a sore thumb as the Swans went on a warpath against everyone.

This time around, the result might not be so surprising considering the red and white’s plight. Anything could happen here.

Head-to-head prediction: Swans by 4 points

Betting tip: Isaac Heeney 2+ goals

Geelong vs Gold Coast Prediction

Saturday, June 7, 4:15pm AEST - GMHBA Stadium

Game of the round right here ladies and gentlemen.

The Cats seem to have their game in order despite a few bumps across the season to date. They cruised through against the Eagles, before Jezza needed to separate the game again late and duly did so. Bazlenka secured another lot of three votes with 38 disposals and is shooting up into Brownlow calculations.

The Suns let one slip at home against the Dockers, but even they would say they didn’t do themselves any favours. Particularly early in the game when Freo got the jump. A rare slip-up in an otherwise impressive season.

Save a spot for blonde bombshell Bodhi Uwland in your All-Australian team predictions. He’s as good as they come in regards to medium-sized defenders who can also join in on attack.

The Cats boast the ‘dash brothers’ in Smith and Holmes, but the Suns have the ‘Bruise brothers in Rowell and Anderson who were again prolific out of the middle in difficult conditions. As the chill hits Geelong, conditions will be tailor-made for them to go large again.

Jezz vs Sam Collins too is a matchup worth watching between the best forward and defender currently in the game.

Head-to-head prediction: Cats by 4 points

Betting tip: Tyson Stengle 2+ goals

GWS Giants vs Port Adelaide Prediction

Saturday, June 7, 7:35pm AEST - Manuka Oval

It was minutes from disaster, but the Giants are back.

It wasn’t pretty how they scraped over the line against the Tigers, and there was probably nothing convincing about how they did it. But, two wins from their last two starts has them back in the season in a big way.

And now they get Port Adelaide in Canberra and a chance to make it three in a row.

The Power’s best looks beyond them and it feels like they’re playing for the bell until the Hinkley/Carr handover becomes official. Whether it's this week, next week, or the end of the season, who really knows?

Still, down a few soldiers are the Giants, but it’s no excuse here for them to not do the job.

Head-to-head prediction: Giants by 34 points

North Melbourne vs West Coast Prediction

Sunday, June 8, 3:20pm AEST - Hands Oval, Bunbury

AFL footy arrives in Bunbury with the Roos selling a pair of games to Western Australia.

It’s been a disappointing start to the season down at Arden St, especially when this year was the year they were expected to at least move out of the bottom rungs of the ladder. They still find themselves there.

The Eagles were again gallant, this time against the Cats, and did so without a heap of stars. It was great to see the skipper Oscar Allen find some touch with four goals too as he becomes the sole man in attack now for the rest of the year with the injury to Waterman.

Mini McQualter has the Eagles playing a recognizable brand of footy, with a handball game set to become a trademark of this team going forward.

They still only managed just 43 inside 50s, a number which they will have to improve against better sides.

Archer Reid is a young man to keep your eye on. Brother of Essendon’s Zach, he’s a really talented emerging forward/ruck.

Funnily enough, these two sides played at this ground in the pre-season and the Eagles got up, just. Will it be a repeat?

A loss here will have all in sundry going bonkers about selling games to opposition teams.

Head-to-head prediction: Roos by 11 points

Betting tip: Luke Davies-Uniacke 25+ disposals and anytime goal

Carlton vs Essendon Prediction

Sunday, June 8, 7:20pm AEST - MCG

Two old rivals, a standalone marquee fixture… and a must-win game for both clubs.

This game should be massive. The gravitas of the clubs makes it massive, except, for the moment, neither team is quite box-office.

The Bombers lost no admirers last week when they pushed the Lions all the way in what became a barely believable performance after quarter-time. Thankfully too, they seemed to get through unscathed, even with Sam Durham battling through a rolled ankle for most of the night.

Still knocking on the door of the top-eight, they would love nothing more than officially ending their great rival’s season.

The Blues have emerged from their bye, hopefully spending the time going to kicking school and doing some target practice going inside 50.

A theme for the Blues too over recent games is they have been beaten by one individual and haven’t seemed to learn from their mistakes, or just not done what has worked for them in the past. With Zach Merrett having another awesome season and Nic Martin in some serious form, both have torched the Blues in the past. Can they stop them?

Head-to-head prediction: Blues by 5 points

Betting tip: Nic Martin 30+ disposals

Melbourne vs Collingwood Prediction

Monday, June 9, 3:20pm AEST - MCG

It’s the monster Kings Birthday clash at the G. A month ago, this game was looking pretty grim but thankfully, the Dees have found a version of what their good footy looks like.

They will be literally kicking themselves though after last week against the Saints, kicking 21 behinds to kick themselves out of the game in the Red Centre. Max Gawn and Steven May were massive once again, but again, bad kicking is bad football.

On the complete flipside is Collingwood, who flexed their muscles again against the Hawks and are the team to beat at the halfway point of the season.

Jamie Elliott kicked another bag of five goals while Nick Daicos, Long, and Sidebottom continued to pull the strings in the midfield for the Collingwood machine.

Will Simon Goodwin send Clayton Oliver to Nick Daicos?

Of course, this day is all about one man though. The great, now Australian of the Year, Neale Daniher, and his fight against MND, the Blue Army will be out in force at the MCG and across Australia as we fight to slay the beast.

It should be comfortable for the Pies too.

Head-to-head prediction: Collingwood by 31 points.

Betting tip: Bobby Hill 3+ goals

St Kilda, Fremantle - BYE

All of a sudden, there’s a sense of renewed hope for Fremantle after their big win on the Gold Coast. They reach the bye in the top eight and are in a position to fly home in the second half of the year with a stack of winnable games at home to come.

The Saints enter its mid-season break with some optimism after their unexpected win over the Dees in the ‘Red Centre’. They’re still a fair way off the pace, but they can use it to build.
