It’s down to six and it’s officially sudden death for everyone from here.

It’s Semi–Final weekend where the teams with the double chance get their opportunity to make things right while last week's winners get the chance to sniff blood in the water and keep a good thing going.

The first of this year's Semis pits The Power against the high-flying Hawks.

The Hawks have been all the rage from the mid-point of the year. Franked by last week's belting of the Dogs in the Elimination Final, has gone from an outside chance to a legitimate chance that they could win it all this year.

They face a Port Adelaide side who, predictably, have gotten the wobbles in finals again.

Can the Power turn it around after a massive 80-point hiding against the Cats last week at home?

Port Adelaide vs Hawthorn Preview

Do you remember how it ended the last time these two teams met?

Having not led all day and trailing by as many as 41 points in the third quarter, Port slammed on five final-quarter goals. Including two in the last 22 seconds and the match-winner from Darcy Byrne-Jones with two seconds remaining to snatch a 1- point victory at Adelaide Oval.

It’s an important marker when looking at this game as it served as a launching pad for the ‘Hokball’ assault and rise we’ve come to know, and a moment that once again proved that Ken Hinkley’s players were indeed playing for him.

The return battle will be intriguing with the pressure seemingly rising on Ken Hinkley to keep his job again, and the Hawks returning to the scene, against the same opposition that kick-started the barnstorming run.

Players to Watch

Jack Ginnivan

Is it too soon to call Jack the new AFL “human headline”?

Both pre and post-Friday nights win over the Dogs, Ginnivan found himself in the news for reasons such as going out for dinner and being cheeky on social media.

While both incidents on the surface seem fine, and Ginnivan played his role with 15 touches and a goal on Friday night, he put himself right in the spotlight once again as he’s done for most of his short career.

Not that it should bother him, but it wouldn’t surprise me if Ken Hinkley printed out the words of his cheeky comment on social media during the week and popped it on the Power’s whiteboard to fire them up.

Then, of course, he’s just one of the dangerous small forward trio that will need some time put into.

Connor Rozee

The Power skipper picked a bad night to have one of the worst games of the season.

The onus was on him to have a big game both as skipper and in the absence of his classy half-backers Dan Houston and Kane Farrell.

With just 16 disposals, 1.1, and minimal impact in the drubbing against the Cats, the young gun was not at the races in his first final in charge.

It places a great degree of pressure and expectations on his shoulders in a cut-throat final.

While he’s had his injury troubles this year, Rozee has still averaged 24.1 disposals per game, 4.6 clearances per game, and 4.2 tackles. He’s only booted 12 goals for the year which is his lowest return of his career – barring the COVID-impacted season where he kicked nine goals.

It’s set up for him on Friday night to make his mark early and have a big say on proceedings. Otherwise, it could be a long night for the Power.

Mitch Georgiades

If there was ever a game for Mitch Georgiades to win a big game for his team, this is the one he will get the best chance to do so.

While already short on key defenders, the Hawks suffered a further blow this week with Sam Frost ruled out for the remainder of the season, leaving the Hawks’ key defenders position threadbare.

It means the Hawks will have to shuffle the decks and the key post will be picked up by either the skipper James Sicily or Josh Weddle who will move back to defence in a different role.

Coming off a 1.2 performance against the Cats, a disappointing showing in what has been a good season for the young forward, Friday night is his best chance to be the man for his side and keep their season alive.

AFL Finals Port Adelaide vs Hawthorn – Who Will Win?

There wouldn’t be a Semi-Final where a home side against an interstate team would be starting so far as outsiders in a while right?

But that’s where we are with this one. But no. The Hawks, who should be outsiders as the traveling young bucks coming up against Port Adelaide who finished the season with a rush to second on the ladder and two home finals, will start as warm favorites.

Port was left wanting on Thursday night, badly missing their kicking class off the half-back line with both Kane Farrell and Dan Houston missing and will be again on Friday night.

Port was bashed around the ball and with Rozee quiet and Butters going off early, left too much heavy lifting to too few.

Butters has been declared fit and ready to go after being subbed out at halftime on Thursday night, but there will be doubts over how ready he is.

The way Port likes to attack via the corridor and defend high leaves them vulnerable to Hawthorn’s turnover game and speed on the way back to goal.

If the Hawks get that going and can keep the ball in motion, it should be enough for them to win the game comfortably.

The fleet of foot small forwards that the Hawks have could cause many a problem for the Power defence—putting the pressure on the likes of Burton, Jones, Byrne – Jones and Bergman to find the right balance between shut-down and attacking.

Prediction: Hawthorn by 13 points.

Betting tip: Dylan Moore (Hawthorn) 15 + disposals & 2 goals.
