The second match of the Saturday Marvel Stadium double-header sees North Melbourne hosting a red-hot Collingwood.

Ah, Roos fans… how good does it feel waking up after a win again?

It had been coming. After a pair of close and honourable losses and a draw which should have been a win, Sunday against the Tigers was as must-win as a must-win game gets.

Meanwhile, Collingwood moved back into outright first place on the ladder after another narrow, but always going-to-happen win over the Crows at the MCG. It was an emotionally charged day for the Pies as they, like the rest of the footy world, were rocked by the sudden death of Adam Selwood, whose younger brother Scott is on the Collingwood coaching staff. 

Of course, the Roos fans will not need reminding of this corresponding game last year. They led by as many as 54 points halfway through the third quarter before Collingwood did the thing that they have been known to do since Craig McRae took charge, and that was come back and win in a close one. This time by just one point.

Oh, and there was a controversial non-50 m penalty that dominated discussion and then was declared an error in not awarding the free kick and penalty. We won’t labour the point any longer Roos fans. It’s all about looking forward now. 

It’s safe to say there’s a bit in this one. It’s a chance to frank what they’ve gained performance-wise over another strong opposition and fuelled the disappointment of last year to get them charged up and in with a chance. For the Pies, they’re just looking to tick another box before a mammoth fortnight leading into their bye.

On a selection front, In positive news for the Roos, they will get Paul Curtis back from his suspension for the game against the Pies. Zac Fisher and Will Phillips will be considered for recalls but there might not be any reason to change a winning team up much for Al Clarkson.

At the Pies, veteran Steele Sidebottom will sit this one out as Collingwood continues to make the most of the position they’re in at the top and rest their veterans. Skipper Darcy Moore will be tested with his shoulder while defender Dan Houston is also racing the clock after suffering a corky against the Crows. 

It’s opened the door for potentially a couple of debutants with young guns Charlie West and Harry DeMattia pushing their cases to earn their stripes.

The Pies, much like most teams since the start of the new decade, have had the better of North Melbourne, winning the past five matches against the Roos in a row.

The Pies have shown their class in recent weeks by showcasing they can win in different ways. Class and composure has always been a hallmark of their game under McRae, with it coming to the fore over the past fortnight as they have lost the clearance battle against both Kurwana (Adelaide) and Walyalup (Fremantle).

It speaks to the completeness of the Pies, who have the best defence and third-best offence in the competition at the halfway point.  

It would take something extraordinary for North to knock them off, but as we saw last year, It’s not beyond the realms of possibility.
