Melbourne Demons vs West Coast Eagles Prediction - Round 9 2026

08/05/2026|Josh Jenkins|AFL Tips & Predictions

The 7th placed Melbourne Demons will host wooden spoon favourites West Coast at Marvel Stadium on Sunday afternoon for Round 9 of AFL footy.

The Demons dropped to 0-3 when playing outside Melbourne this season following last Sunday’s 131-114 loss to the Swans at the SCG.

Marvel may present a different challenge for Steven King’s side, with all five of their wins in 2026 coming at the MCG.

Elsewhere, West Coast slumped to a fifth straight defeat after a disastrous 99-88 loss to a depleted and previously winless Richmond side at Optus Stadium.

That performance was arguably more disappointing than the Eagles’ 143-42 loss to St Kilda the weekend prior.

Melbourne dominated the latest meeting between the sides 139-56 in Round 21 last season, marking a sixth victory from its last seven matches against West Coast, across which its average winning margin is 52.5 points.

That said, young West Coast forwards like Jobe Shanahan, Harley Reid and Jamie Cripps have a penchant for finding a goal or two and they have nothing to lose this season.

The Dees need to be wary of complacency in this one.

Melbourne Demons vs West Coast Eagles Prediction and Betting Tips

Head-to-Head Prediction

The Dees are a force offensively. No one thought they’d be saying that about them, but under Steven King, scoring goals is no problem for this squad in 2026.

While they do lose Brody Mihocek to a moderate-grade hamstring strain, their depth is firing with Jacob van Rooyen and Bayley Fritsch both in strong goalkicking form.

West Coast suffered an embarrassing loss against a depleted and winless Tigers. Questions now begin over Andrew McQualter’s tenure.

The Dees are around seven-goal favourites and we’d say there will be a period in this game where they kick half a dozen in a signature MCG-style burst at Marvel.

Head-to-head prediction: Melbourne Demons by 50 points.

First Goal Scorer Prediction

Kysaiah Pickett has been one of the form players of the competition all season.

We love what he's doing this year; kicking goals, distributing and causing headaches for every defender he faces.

Against a weak West Coast defence that recently conceded a triple-figure smashing to St Kilda, he should be unstoppable from the opening bounce.

Betting tip: Kysaiah Pickett.

Most Disposals Prediction

Why not stick with the form man? Pickett has been electric in 2026, racking up elite disposal numbers, including a 33-disposal effort earlier in the season.

His ability to find space and work between the arcs makes him a safe bet to lead the stats sheet while feeding the Dees' firing forward line and snagging a few of his own.

Betting tip: Kysaiah Pickett.
