The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, the outdoor seating at the pub is starting to look appealing and it's time for finals footy. 

The first-ever AFL Wildcard Finals Round sees an absolute belter at the MCG as the Dees host a resurgent Carlton Football Club. 

Two of the oldest and biggest clubs in the competition, one stadium built for exactly this and survival on the line.

The Demons walked into Round 24 with an outside shot at the top four and a week off. They walked out with a 108-87 loss to the Western Bulldogs and a much harder road.

Max Gawn did everything a captain could reasonably do; 28 disposals, 59 hitouts, 10 clearances and 10 score involvements, but the Dogs were the more determined side.

Worse, injuries to Jake Lever (toe) and Matthew Jefferson (knee) have thinned out Melbourne's key-position stocks at precisely the wrong moment.

Carlton could hardly have timed their run better (okay a couple of early wins probably could’ve helped). The Blues finished the home-and-away season by rallying past the ladder-leading Dockers 119-82 in a huge upset heading into finals. 

There's history here too. The last time these two met in finals, Carlton escaped with a 73-71 win in the 2023 semi final, a result Demons fans have not filed away neatly.

Head-to-Head Prediction

The last time we saw these two collide in September, it was a semi final for the ages.

The Demons kicked 9.17 and blew a golden chance during their supposed golden era, with Blake Acres slotting the sealer for Carlton with seconds on the clock.

Three years on, revenge may not be the driving force, but nobody in either camp has forgotten.

Carlton arrive as the most in-form side in the game since Josh Fraser took the reins as interim coach, a job he's since secured in a full-time capacity.

That win over Fremantle was the exclamation point on a season of two very distinct halves. These Blues genuinely have the momentum to shock the competition and go on a fairytale run.

Melbourne have been strong for long stretches, but they look to be faltering at the wrong time of year, unable to shake a determined Bulldogs outfit last week.

Losing Lever compounds the absence of the suspended Jacob van Rooyen. Two sizeable vacancies, and no good week to be carrying them.

Melbourne generally back their own midfield group rather than chasing match-ups, but we get the feeling they'll try to blunt either Patrick Cripps or Sam Walsh, with Trent Rivers, Tom Sparrow or Koltyn Tholstrup the likely candidates.

Conversely, Cooper Lord has taken on a few run-with roles in recent weeks and shapes up as a reasonable physical match for Kysaiah Pickett.

If Lord, or anyone in navy blue  can keep Pickett quiet, we think the Blues get this done.

Head-to-head prediction: Carlton Blues by 14 points.

First Goal Scorer Prediction

There's real pressure on Melbourne's forward line this week with van Rooyen suspended and the key-position depth stretched thin.

That means Carlton's talls should get better looks at goal early and one man tends to be the beneficiary when the ball goes long.

Most Disposals Prediction

Carlton concede the fewest disposals to half-backs and general defenders in the competition, which narrows down where this market should realistically land.

If Kozzy Pickett has one of those nights and tops the count, we reckon it's curtains for the Blues, he racked up 33 disposals the last time these two met.

But we’re backing Carlton to have learned that lesson and to apply some genuine pressure to him this time.

Cripps has been one of the best players in the competition across the back half of the season and he's rarely denied when it comes to high involvement.

Matthew Jefferson will be closely monitored this week after being cleared of structural damage to his knee.

Tom McDonald could shift back to defence to help plug the gap, which would open the door for Max Heath to come in as back-up to Gawn and provide a target inside 50 if Jefferson doesn't get up.

Jake Melksham is another live option given his strong VFL form, while 2025 draftees Xavier Taylor and Latrelle Pickett are in the frame for a recall.

The Blues are flying and shouldn't fix what isn't broken. That said, experienced pair Will Hayward and Nick Haynes are expected to return from injury to bolster the side.

Both missed the win over Fremantle with ankle complaints and will need the week to prove their fitness.

If they pass all required tests, expect Fraser to recall them at the expense of Oliver Hollands and one of Lewis Young or Wade Derksen.

Derksen is tipped to get the nod ahead of Young, which was reflected in last week's selection when Young came in for the injured Haynes. The same logic applies to Hayward and Hollands.
