Last week's results did neither side any favours, but in different ways. GWS's loss to Essendon was the kind of result that only the Giants seem capable of delivering. They were in the contest. They let it go in the final quarter. A three-point defeat to a side that had won one game all season is not easy to explain, and there are too many results like it on the Giants' ledger across 2026.

Sydney's loss to the Crows was a different kind of problem. Beaten at home for the first time this season, the Swans' defensive record against quality opposition has been concerning.
