GWS Giants vs Essendon Bombers Prediction - Round 9 2026

08/05/2026|Josh Jenkins|AFL Tips & Predictions

Looking to stay in touch with the top 10, GWS will welcome a struggling Essendon lineup to ENGIE Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

GWS dropped to 3-5 in 2026 through an 83-63 defeat against Gold Coast at People First Stadium last weekend.

It continued an underwhelming record away from home this season, with the Giants losing four of five matches outside their usual venues and their only win coming against bottom-placed Richmond during Gather Round.

As a result, they should welcome a return to Western Sydney where they’ve won their last four fixtures against Essendon by an average margin of 56.8 points.

Essendon was similarly blown out 143-79 by Brisbane at Marvel Stadium last Saturday, meaning the Bombers now hold a 1-7 record in 2026. GWS won the latest meeting between these clubs 104-56 at Docklands in Round 19, 2025, although it should be noted that the currently sidelined Tom Green was influential on that night.

With the pressure mounting on both clubs to salvage their seasons, this clash in the West of the town serves as a vital crossroad.

Can Adam Kingsley's men turn ENGIE Stadium back into a fortress, or will the Bombers finally find the defensive resolve required to compete for four quarters?

GWS Giants vs Essendon Prediction and Betting Tips

Head-to-Head Prediction

We think the Giants are perfectly placed to get their season back on track against a Bombers outfit that is currently leaking goals like a rusty bucket.

While GWS have been consistently inconsistent this year, their form at home remains their greatest asset.

The loss of Tom Green is a massive blow to the Giants' engine room, but the arrival of Clayton Oliver has provided some much-needed veteran grunt to fill that void.

Essendon, meanwhile, continues to languish in the cellar with a losing streak that is starting to feel like a permanent residency.

While Zach Merrett continues to fight a lone hand in the middle, the Bombers simply lack the structural integrity to stop the Giants' dangerous goal-scoring unit featuring Jesse Hogan and Toby Greene.

We expect GWS to flex their muscles early and exploit an Essendon defence that has struggled to stem the tide all season. The Giants should cruise to a comfortable victory here as they look to climb back toward the top eight.

Betting tip: GWS Giants by 25+ points.

First Goal Scorer Prediction

Aaron Cadman is our pick to get the scoreboard ticking over early. The 2022 No. 1 draft pick has already established himself as a star of the competition.

He grows with confidence in every and with the Giants likely to dominate the early inside-50 count, he should find plenty of opportunities to use his elite IQ and athleticism to snag the opener.

Betting tip: Aaron Cadman.

Most Disposals Prediction

Zach Merrett is an absolute ball magnet and we expect him to lead the stats sheet win, lose, or draw.

The former Dons skipper is the heartbeat of their transition play and rarely has a quiet afternoon, consistently racking up massive numbers regardless of the scoreboard pressure.

Betting tip: Zach Merrett.
