GWS Giants 2025 AFL Finals Preview

27/08/2025|Josh Jenkins|AFL Tips & Predictions

Welcome to The Huddle’s AFL Finals previews!

After a long season and one of the tightest races ever to secure a place in the September action, we are down to the final eight teams that will battle it out for this year's AFL Premiership.

As we gear up for all the September action, it’s time to look at and preview all the teams that have qualified for the AFL Finals in 2025.

For the third time in three seasons, the GWS Giants will play finals under Adam Kingsley. Following last year's disappointing straight-sets exit, which included coughing up leads in both finals, they will be fuelled by the disappointment to take them on a deep run.

For the latest news, analysis, picks, and betting tips, read our GWS Giants finals preview below!

GWS Giants Road to the AFL Finals

The Big Big Sound was sounding nice and early with a thumping Opening Round win over Collingwood and a come-from-behind win over Melbourne at the MCG.

After a strong start, the following week, they were overrun by the Hawks in Tassie before a pair of strong wins over the Eagles and Saints.

They remained in Adelaide after the Gather Round and went down to the Crows in a slog of a contest before a reality check defeat at the hands of the Dogs by 32 points.

A loss to the struggling Swans a week later in the Sydney derby left the Giants lingering on the edge of the top eight. Lucky for them, they had a trip to their favourite away venue - Geelong the following week to get a much-needed win.

Jesse Hogan kicked a bag of seven and Jake Riccardi kicked a match-winner, and the Giants appeared to be getting things back on track.

They dropped the next game at home against the Dockers, before a Toby Greene-inspired performance led the Giants to a huge win over the Blues.

The mixed results continued until the big win over Brisbane at the Gabba, which was the breakout performance of youngster Aaron Cadman, who announced himself to the competition with a bag of five goals, alongside a bag of six from Hogan, to win the game.

It was the start of a six-game winning run for the Giants. While they were getting closer to locking in a place in the finals, and potentially even a top-four spot, they lost heavily to the Bulldogs at Marvel, and they were back in the ‘will they? Won’t they?’ area of the ladder.

Three wins to end the year over the Roos, the Suns away from home, and then a seesawing final game against St Kilda saw the Giants lock in a finals spot, and host a home Elimination Final.

GWS Giants Players to Watch

Toby Greene

If Callan Ward has been the heartbeat of the footy club, Toby Greene has been its spirit animal and spiritual leader.

He plays on the edge and craves success. No one would be hurting more than him following their capitulations last year. At 31, he’s still in his prime, but would be acutely aware that his time at the top would be starting to trend down.

He’ll give his all for four weeks and command attention from opposition coaches.

Finn Callaghan

One of the young guns in the Giants' engine room, Callaghan has emerged this year as one of the best pure midfielders in the competition.

His cleanliness with the ball, skills, and burst from stoppage are big features of his game, all of which come to the fore in the furnace that is finals footy.

He’s forced himself into the conversation of being one of the first players opposition coaches think of when it comes to the match committee and the opposition analysis.

Jake Stringer

These were the games for which Jake Stringer was recruited to the Giants for.

Be the difference maker in a big Final.

While he’s had his struggles with his body this year, he’s proven when he has been out on the park that his best footy is certainly still good enough to make a difference at the highest level.

Can the package deliver for the Big Big Sound this September?

Why can the GWS Giants win the AFL Premiership?

If the ‘Orange Tsunami’ can get going, look out.

In full flight, the Giants' best football is the best depiction and version of what modern football looks like.

They have the best key defender in the game, two of the best young midfielders in the game, and, if fit, one of the best key forwards in the game. It’s an imposing lineup and a challenge for the opposition.

What will hold the GWS Giants back from the 2025 AFL Premiership?

Can they compete without their bookends?

The fitness of their key posts has become a major talking point for the Giants on the run home, with injuries striking down key duo Jesse Hogan and Jack Buckley.

Hogan has battled a foot problem for much of the second half of the year and has missed a few weeks of footy, while Buckley has suffered back-to-back calf strains in the last month of the season.

Other key injuries to important players, Brent Daniels and Josh Kelly, have also played a role in their stumbling season. Can they get them all back for a big finals run?

Prediction: Semi-Final

How many AFL Premierships does GWS Giants have?

None

The Giants are yet to taste premiership success. The AFL’s youngest club has been to the last day in September once before in 2019, and has played in Four Preliminary Finals. In their short history.

GWS Giants Premiership Odds:
