Super Saturday kicks off on the Gold Coast, with the Suns hosting the GWS Giants.
The "Expansion Cup" has had a bit more spice this year — probably because both teams are actually good now? Either way, the comp's been better for it.

Gold Coast, while not 100% confirmed in, is all but locked in their first-ever finals appearance thanks to having an extra game to play, after holding off a late Carlton surge at Marvel. The Blues made them sweat for a bit late, but the Suns were dominant when it mattered and got the job done comfortably enough.

They’re finding form at the perfect time in their push for a top-four spot. Matt Rowell was everywhere last week, doing what he does best, while Noah Anderson, though well held, still managed to influence the game when it counted.

Up forward, Ben King was commanding with a six-goal haul — every time Carlton started to build momentum, he shut it down with a mark and a dead-straight finish. And his forward-line mate, Ben Long, kept his hot streak rolling too.

The Giants also kept their finals hopes alive with a gritty win over North in Canberra, holding onto eighth spot in a jam-packed ladder. They’re level on 56 points with the Suns and Hawks (though the Suns still have a game in hand), and they’ve got the Dogs breathing down their necks.

They’ll finish the season at home against the Saints, but they’d love to avoid a do-or-die scenario in Round 24. This makes this clash against the Suns absolutely crucial for Adam Kingsley’s side.

History's on their side — GWS have a strong record against Gold Coast — but this version of the Suns, especially at home under Damien Hardwick, is a whole different beast. It’s become one of the toughest away trips in footy.

The Giants will be without Jake Stringer, who tweaked a hammy against North and won’t be back before finals… assuming they get there.

There’s hope Jesse Hogan could return if he clears a fitness test, which would be a massive boost to a forward line stretched thin by injuries.

For the Suns, Sam Flanders should return after missing last week with a back issue, and Jake Rogers and Leo Lombard impressed in the VFL — though breaking into this Suns side right now is no easy task.

These two sides played out one of the games of the season not long ago — and if this one's even half as good, we’re in for a cracking start to Super Saturday.

For team news, expert analysis, odds, and betting tips, check out our full Suns vs Giants preview below.

Gold Coast vs GWS Giants Predicted Teams

Gold Coast Predicted Team List

B: Bodhi Uwland, Sam Collins, Joel Jeffrey

HB: John Noble, Mac Andrew, Wil Powell

C: Lachie Weller, Matt Rowell, Brayden Fiorini

HF: Touk Miller, Ethan Read, Bailey Humphrey

F: Jy Farrar, Ben King, Ben Long

Foll: Jarrod Witts, Matt Rowell, Noah Anderson

Int: Nick Holman, Ben Ainsworth, Connor Budarick, Oscar Adams, Sam Flanders

GWS Giants Predicted Team List

B: Connor Idun, Sam Taylor, Harry Himmelberg

HB: Lachie Whitfield, Leek Aleer, Lachie Ash

C: Stephen Coniglio, Xavier O’Halloran, Ryan Angwin

HF: Toby Bedford, Aaron Cadman, Darcy Jones

F: Toby Greene, Jesse Hogan, Jake Riccardi

Foll: Kieran Briggs, Finn Callaghan, Tom Green

Int: Max Gruzewski, Joe Fonti, Callum Brown, Harvey Thomas, Harry Rowston

Gold Coast vs GWS Giants Prediction & Betting Tips

Head-to-Head Prediction

The Giants have won 14 of the past 15 clashes against the Suns. They have utterly dominated their fellow expansion brothers.

But as we alluded to, this is a very different Gold Coast team.

Over the past five weeks, the Suns have elevated their defensive profile to the fourth-best in the competition. It shapes as a big battle between their defence, the Giants' front half game, and scoring power as they are ranked sixth in the competition over that time.

This one might just be a battle of desperation. With finals still not locked in for the Suns, how desperate will the Suns want to lock it away with two games to play? And on the flip side, how much experience do the Giants have over their expansion brothers in winning the crunch games? How often have we seen Toby Greene go to work and will his team over the line?

Not to mention, the hold that the Giants have over the Suns, but the Suns have been breaking hoodoos since Damien Hardwick got to the Coast… and they might break another one here.

Betting tip: Suns.

First Goal Prediction

Toby was back with a bang last week. Three goals in another ‘I’m sorry for getting myself in trouble and missing a big game’ performance for the Giants skipper.

He’ll be wired for this one as he knows how big it is for their season, which is why we’re picking him to land the first blow on the scoreboard.

Betting tip: Toby Greene.

Most Disposals Prediction

Value wherever you look here. So many options to include if you’re looking for a disposal feast.

Eyes are drawn to the experienced Sun Touk Miller here. In the two games since returning from his hamstring, he’s gone 25 disposals in each. He has a healthy record against the Giants, including a massive 37 touches last time they met. He’s our pick here for most touches.

Betting tip: Touk Miller 30+ disposals.

Gold Coast Suns vs GWS Giants Match Details

Date: Saturday, August 16, 2025.

First Bounce: 12:35pm AEST.

Location: People First Stadium, Gold Coast.

How to watch: Fox Footy/Kayo Sports.
