Another season of AFL footy is back, and it’s kicking off with an absolute banger in Sydney vs Carlton at the SCG.
While we’ve all been busy speculating during the preseason, the Opening Round brings the first serving of AFL premiership action to Sydney.
Which teams have put the work in over the offseason? Which recruiting gambits will pay off and who will snag two points, in their first step on the road to September?
The Sydney Swans host the Carlton Blues in a reunion, as Charlie Curnow poetically faces his old club in the season opener.
Whether you’re a diehard Blues fan or Bloods supporter from way back, the SCG is where you want to be, come Thursday night.
The 2026 AFL season promises to be one of the most competitive in recent memory, and there is no better way to set the tone than with a blockbuster clash between these two powerhouse clubs.
With mouthwatering matchups across both midfields and Curnow’s Carlton comeuppance on the agenda, this Round 0 fixture is the perfect litmus test for both clubs.

Sydney vs Carlton Prediction and Betting Tips
Head-to-Head Prediction
We arrive in season 2026 with a clash between old friends.
Charlie Curnow won a pair of Coleman Medals as a Blue but departed in less than ideal circumstances. Some at the Blues wanted him to stay and help them build again, others decided he was best allowed to find a new home so the Blues could adapt to a more team-first mentality.
Defending Curnow will literally be a tall order for his former Blues teammate Jacob Weitering, who isn’t ideally suited to marking the goal-kicking machine known as Charlie.
The Swans will be keen to get a jumpstart on the season after an awful beginning to 2025, which ultimately cost them a chance at a late September run.
The midfield clash will be the highlight (aside from Curnow v Carlton) with Heeney, Warner and Gulden colliding with Cripps, Walsh and former Swan George Hewett.
With a host of new faces, Michael Voss’s men will be ready to put their new strategy into action, but will it be enough to overcome a star-studded Swans side?
Sydney should be too good, with too much overall class but the Blues would - and should - give themselves a sneaky chance.
Betting tip: Sydney Swans by 21 points.
First Goal Prediction
With all the talk surrounding Charlie Curnow and his controversial departure, it’s the perfect distraction for Harry McKay to fly under the radar. The Blues’ spearhead will be hungry to stamp his authority early in the season.
He’s often the target man when Carlton wants to set the tempo early. If the Blues are to silence the SCG crowd, expect them to kick long to Big H and watch him slot the opener.
Betting Tip: Harry McKay.
Most Disposals Prediction
As we’ve seen in years gone by, Sam Walsh is effectively a human ball magnet. We expect nothing less in season 2026.
Whether he’s finding space in the corridor or grinding it out in traffic, Walsh’s work rate is simply unmatched.
With a massive midfield battle on the cards, expect him to rack up the touches early and often.
Don’t overthink this one.
Betting tip: Sam Walsh.
