Carlton Blues vs Melbourne Demons Prediction - Round 3 2026

27/03/2026|Josh Jenkins|AFL Tips & Predictions

Two titanic clubs of footy will face off in front of a packed MCG on Sunday afternoon to round out AFL Round 3. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Together with one win and one loss from their opening two matches of 2026, Carlton and Melbourne are realistically both contending for wildcard positions in the top 10 this season.

Both teams will be desperate for the win, to keep touch with the pack and put some distance between themselves and the cellar dwellers early.

In their last four meetings, all the matchups have gone down to the wire, with Carlton edging just ahead in not one, not two but three of the last four matches

The most recent clash came in Round 19 of last season, where, despite a superb performance from Kozzie Pickett, Carlton came home at the death.

Whatever happens in this one, we’re expecting a low scoring grind. It’d be unsurprising if both teams finish the match under 100 points scored.

No matter who your club is, you can’t miss the Blues vs the Dees on a Sunday afternoon at the greatest stadium in the Southern Hemisphere.

Carlton Blues vs Melbourne Demons Prediction and Betting Tips

Head-to-Head Prediction

We arrive at the MCG for a classic rivalry between two of the league's biggest and most popular clubs. Both sides have shown they can be Jekyll and Hyde early in this 2026 campaign.

Melbourne looked like world-beaters in their opening win against St Kilda but were absolutely dismantled by the Dockers in the west. Carlton, on the other hand, survived a scare against Richmond but still look to be finding their feet with a reshuffled lineup.

The key to this contest lies in the midfield, while Patrick Cripps and Sam Walsh are a formidable duo for the Blues, the Dees' combination of Max Gawn and Jack Steele provides a level of experience and physicality that is hard to overlook.

If Melbourne can find the scoring potency they showed in the opening week, they should have the edge here. We expect a tight, contested scrap that goes right down to the wire, but the Dees' ability to hit the scoreboard in bursts might be the difference.

Head-to-head prediction: Melbourne Demons by 3 points.

First Goal Scorer Prediction

Harry McKay remains the focal point of the Carlton attack and will be eager to stamp his authority early on the MCG stage. Despite the Blues' inconsistent start, McKay’s ability to find space and use his height in the air makes him a perennial threat.

We see the Blues following a similar pattern to their Opening Round clash with Sydney. They're likely to get out to a fast start and get run down from behind, we’ve seen it time and again with the Carlton club.

If Carlton can secure the first centre clearance, McKay is the logical target to slot the opener.

Betting tip: Harry McKay.

Most Disposals Prediction

The most exciting man called Walsh in football, the former Rising Star has become a consistent standout for the Blues.

His work rate is unmatched and we believe he’ll get the best of Jack Steele and Tom Sparrow in the midfield battle.

Expect Walsh to max stats and distribute early. He rarely has a quiet day at the MCG, so whether or not the Blues win this one, Sam Walsh will be thereabouts for most influential.

Betting tip: Sam Walsh.
