AFLW Tips & Predictions Round 2

03/09/2024|SB Staff|AFL Tips & Predictions

Welcome back to The Huddle’s AFLW tips and predictions for round 2.

It was a big week for women’s footy last round, but it was a bigger week for the Huddle with most of our legs hitting! So, we’re off to a flying start in the new AFLW season.

There were certainly some eye-catching results last week. Some massive surprises, some big scores, some feel-good wins, and some worrying injury concerns.

Will it prove to be a one-week-wonder for some, or will they show that they mean business this year by backing up with another win? Check out our expert AFLW Round 2 tips and predictions below.

Western Bulldogs vs Port Adelaide Prediction

Friday, September 6, 4:30 PM AEST – MCG

Another fixturing own goal by the AFL (who would have thought) has seen this clash get moved to the home of footy and away from Whitten Oval.

Although it’s kind of apt that while this game is the curtain raiser for the men’s final, both these sides are desperately searching to raise the curtain on their season.

The Dogs were woeful in Canberra. We know it’s probably going to be another long season, but that was a tough watch.

The Power gave a rather good account for themselves against a typically strong Crows outfit. Their young kids certainly pack a punch!

We think they’ll be too good for the Dogs. Hopefully for the sons and daughters of the Scray,’ it’s not an omen for what’s to come later in the evening.

Prediction: Port Adelaide.

Betting tip: Ashleigh Saint (Port) 15 disposals + 2 goals

Melbourne vs Brisbane Lions Prediction

Saturday, September 7, 11:05 AM AEST – Casey Fields

Saturday morning footy down at Casey? Sure!

Despite the controversial scenes at the end of their game against the Cats, which was some win by the Demons on Saturday night. The perfect result to exact revenge on the mob that knocked you out of finals.

Now they come up against a reigning premier who was on the receiving end of the Roos revenge tour kick-off show. Slumping to their biggest-ever defeat in AFLW history.

Both sides could be down a couple of stars for this one. Some dodgy shoulders will need to be put to the test.

You’d think the Dees should be too good at home.

Prediction: Melbourne.

Betting tip: Tyla Hanks (Melbourne) most disposals.

West Coast vs Essendon Prediction

Saturday, September 7, 1:05 PM AEST – Mineral Resources Park

How good was that from the Eagles!

The Daisy Pearce legend continues to grow as she got her coaching career off to a perfect start as the Eagles held on to win against the Tigers. Winning their opening game in a season for the first time.

There’s still a bit of a way to go with this squad, but a winning start is always the best start.

Yes, it was only just round 1, but it might already be cross your fingers time Bomber fans. Cross your fingers and pray to the footy gods that skipper Bonnie Toogood isn’t going to miss a chunk or the whole season. Probably the sourest note of the day from a sour one at Windy Hill last Saturday. We’re tipping the Daisy train to keep rolling at home.

Prediction: West Coast.

Betting tip: Jess Hosking (West Coast) 15 + disposals + anytime goal.

Collingwood vs Hawthorn Prediction

Saturday, September 7, 1:05 PM AEST – Victoria Park

Hawthorn may be a 50/50 chance of crashing out of the Men’s finals series this weekend. But fear not Hawks fans, that doesn't mean that Hokball is done for the year.

The Hawks franked their pre-season hype by putting on a show against a Carlton outfit who were no match to the skill and endeavor of a Hawks team brimming with young stars and superstar older heads.

The Pies certainly didn’t disgrace themselves on opening night when they went down to the Swans. Despite the loss, it was a positive night for them under new coach Sam Wright.

It’s a cliché yes, but bad kicking is bad footy. How different the scoreboard could have looked. Oh well.

They should be stronger this year with the inclusion of their captain Bri Davey. And they get back to Victoria Park where star forward Eliza James has a fantastic relationship with the big sticks there.

If the Hawks did that to Carlton, and with Collingwood tipped to be not too far ahead of the Blues when all is said and done, this one might be another fun one to watch for Hawks fans.

Prediction: Hawthorn.

Betting tip: Eliza James (Collingwood) 2+ goals.

Richmond vs GWS Giants Prediction

Sunday, September 8, 1:05 PM AEST – Swinburne Centre

Temper your expectations because nearly everyone is going to do that to the Bulldogs this year…. But gee whiz the Giants looked good.

You could have fooled me by saying that was the first time Eilish O’Dowd had touched a Sherrin. That’s certainly one way to fill the shoes and the legacy of Cora Staunton.

If you’re new to AFLW and want to follow one player to watch, be the next superstar of this competition, Number Seven, Zarlie Goldsworthy. She’ll be it.

On the flip side, what a real facepalm performance that was from the Tigers. A real lay-up chance to get a couple of wins early and build momentum has turned it back into the scrap to make the eight should they go down here. Expect a bounce back.

Prediction: Richmond.

Betting tip: Courtney Jones (Richmond) first goal.

Gold Coast vs Carlton Prediction

Sunday, September 8, 1:05 PM AEST – Great Barrier Reef Arena

Both these sides would be counting down to this one pretty feverishly after poor first-up showings.

The Blues shot themselves in the foot and were run off their feet by the Hawks while the Suns were put to the sword by a rampant St Kilda on their home deck.

On seemingly neutral territory in Mackay, it’s going to come down to who is cleaner in what is sure to be greasy conditions.

We’re backing the Suns to bounce back here and the Mackay girls to put on a show at home.

Prediction: Gold Coast.

Betting tip: Charlie Rowbottom (Gold Coast) 25 + disposals + 10 tackles.

North Melbourne vs Geelong Prediction

Sunday, September 8, 3:05 PM AEST – Arden St

In case you needed any reminders as to who the premiership favorites were this season, you got it loudly and last Sunday afternoon.

The “Roos Revenge tour” is off and running, which spells danger and misfortune for whoever has to play them.

Their next victim? Geelong, who were bounced on their home deck last week by the Dees in stunning fashion.

Yes, they made the prelim last year, but if you drop this one in a short season, it starts making things incredibly difficult. You’d think Norths will probably win this by plenty.

Prediction: North Melbourne.

Betting tip: Jacqui Parry (Geelong) first goal.

St Kilda vs Sydney Swans Prediction

Sunday, September 8, 3:05 PM AEST – RSEA Park

Who saw that coming from the Saints?

By far the biggest surprise of the round just gone, the Saints certainly made everyone sit up and take notice.

Shock horror but if you put your gun key forward back in the forward line full-time, you can actually kick a winning score! It was awesome to see Jesse Wardlaw back at her best.

But the Saints fans will be hoping that it wasn’t a fluke. No better opportunity to test that mettle than against the Swans who are continuing to take massive strides in their third season.

It’s not just Chloe Molloy doing it all now. There’s a cast of plenty which makes them super dangerous again.

If the Saints can continue the supply to Wardlaw and contain Molloy and Bec Privitelli, then, I think they can get it done.

Prediction: St Kilda.

Betting tip: Lucy McEvoy (Swans) most disposals.

Fremantle vs Adelaide Crows Prediction

Sunday, September 8, 5:05 PM AEST – Fremantle Oval

How about that for a welcome surprise!

The Dockers came to Windy Hill and not only took advantage of a depleted Bombers but went and put the foot on their throats to get their year started on the perfect note.

They return home with a win in their back pocket, but the Crows are coming to town… and we all know how good they are.

There’s a lot of new talent running around at the Dockers this year and that was the perfect way for those who played to make a first impression.

So, is this version of Freo the shiny and new one we were hoping for? Or will the Crows bring them back down to earth and keep us asking the same questions?

Prediction: Adelaide Crows.

Betting tip: Anie Tigh (Freo) 2+ goals.

AFLW Premiership Odds 2024
