Since 1948, 14 mares have had a winning Turnbull Stakes result to their name. The past five individuals are right up with the best mares to race in Australia – Via Sistina (2024), Verry Elleegant (2020), Winx (2017, 2018), Makybe Diva (2005) and Let’s Elope (1991).
When Winx won the Turnbull Stakes in 2017, it was her first win at Flemington racecourse and her 21st consecutive win. When she won in 2018, it was her 28th win in a row – she went on to win 33 on the trot.
Legendary trainer Bart Cummings rated his 1968 Turnbull Stakes result with Galilee as the greatest stayer he trained. Galilee won the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup double in 1966.
Only Let’s Elope (1991) and Rising Fast (1954) have won a Turnbull Stakes, Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup in the same year.
