The biggest Tour de France winning margin in the past 40 years was achieved by Frenchman Laurent Fignon, who won the 1984 race by 10 minutes and 32 seconds.

No French riders have won the Tour de France since Bernard Hinault’s record-equalling fifth triumph in 1985.

Spanish legend Miguel Induráin holds the record for most consecutive Tour de France victories, winning five straight from 1991 to 1995.

Belgium’s Eddy Merckx (1969–75) and Britain’s Mark Cavendish (2008–21) share the record for most overall stage wins, with 34.

The 2022 Tour set a new standard for speed, with winner Jonas Vingegaard riding 3,349.8km in 79 hours, 33 minutes and 20 seconds – an average speed of 42.102km/h.

Australian Cadel Evans became the oldest Tour de France winner in 88 years in 2011, aged 34 years and 160 days.
