Prior to Cameron Smith’s 2022 triumph, Greg Norman was the last Australian to win the British Open, hoisting the Claret Jug for the second time in 1993.

Since Nick Faldo’s 1992 triumph, only two British golfers have won the British Open: Northern Ireland duo Darren Clarke (2011) and Rory McIlroy (2014).

After seven play-offs in the previous 15 years, there has been only one play-off required at the British Open since 2010 – when American Zach Johnson defeated Australia’s Marc Leishman and South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen in 2015.

US legend Tiger Woods (2000, 2005 and 2006), South Africa’s Ernie Els (2002 and 2012) and Ireland’s Pádraig Harrington (2007 and 2008) are the only players to win multiple British Opens in the past 30 years.

The United States is the most prolific nation among British Open winners, with 33 Americans taking out the tournament 48 times in total.
