HOW IS THE NORM SMITH MEDAL DECIDED?

Fast facts

A countback has been required to decide the Norm Smith Medal winner just once, with Geelong’s Paul Chapman edging out St Kilda’s Jason Gram for the award in 2009.

Four players have claimed the honour despite playing on the losing side in the AFL Grand Final: Richmond’s Maurice Rioli (1982), Geelong’s Gary Ablett Sr (1989), Collingwood’s Nathan Buckley (2002) and West Coast’s Chris Judd (2005).

Two Norm Smith Medals were awarded in 2010 due to the Grand Final finishing in a draw – St Kilda’s Lenny Hayes earned the gong for his performance in the first decider, while Collingwood’s Scott Pendlebury carried it off after the replay.

Brisbane's Will Ashcroft became the youngest-ever Norm Smith Medal winner in 2024 at age 20, surpassing Adelaide's Andrew McLeod, who was 21 when he won his first medal in 1997. Richmond legend Kevin Bartlett, at 32 years old in 1980, was the oldest recipient until Geelong’s 33-year-old Isaac Smith overtook his record in 2022.

Hawthorn’s Gary Ayres (1986 and 1988), Adelaide’s Andrew McLeod (1997 and 1998), Hawthorn’s Luke Hodge (2008 and 2014) and Brisbane’s Will Ashcroft (2024 and 2025) are all two-time Norm Smith Medal winners, while Richmond’s Dustin Martin leads the pack with three.
