WHAT IS THE BROWNLOW MEDAL?

WHEN IS THE BROWNLOW MEDAL HELD?

Fast Facts

Geelong’s Edward "Carji" Greeves was the inaugural Brownlow Medal winner in 1924.

Midfielders have dominated the award, enjoying a Brownlow Medal monopoly since ruckmen Jim Stynes (Melbourne, 1991) and Scott Wynd (Footscray, 1992), and defender Gavin Wanganeen (Essendon, 1993) won in three consecutive seasons.

The record for most votes in a Brownlow Medal count was 36, shared by 2017 winner Dustin Martin and 2021 recipient Ollie Wines, until Patrick Cripps’ staggering tally of 45 votes in 2024 – a count that saw runner-up Nick Daicos get 38.

Mark Ricciuto (Adelaide), Nathan Buckley (Collingwood) and Adam Goodes (Sydney) were involved in just the second three-way Brownlow Medal tie (and the first in 73 years) in 2003.

West Coast teammates Chris Judd (2004) and Ben Cousins (2005) are the last players from the same club to win the Brownlow in consecutive seasons.

Carlton’s Patrick Cripps (2022) is the most recent player to win the Brownlow Medal while playing for a team that failed to make the finals, with the Blues finishing ninth.
