Fillies have a great record in the Golden Slipper, first run in 1957. They’ve won 31 Slippers, while geldings have won six times.
Gai Waterhouse has won a record eight Golden Slippers, two more than her famous father, Tommy Smith.
Only two horses have won a Doncaster Mile and backed up to win the Queen Elizabeth Stakes – More Joyous in 2012 and Iko in 1980.
The TJ Smith Stakes is named after legendary trainer Tommy Smith, who died in 1998. The following year, the Endeavour Stakes was renamed the TJ Smith Stakes and was won by Ab Initio.
Mr Brightside backed up his win in 2022 with another in 2023 to be the 10th horse to win more than one Doncaster Mile.
The Australian Derby was one race on the Australian racing calendar that had eluded Hall of Fame trainer Gai Waterhouse, but she finally broke through in 2023 when Major Beel gave a dashing display with Tim Clark in the saddle.
