From 1971 to 1975, Romanian legend Ilie Năstase won the tournament four times and finished runner-up once.

Ivan Lendl featured in the decider of nine straight ATP World Tour Finals tournaments from 1980 to 1988, winning a then-record of five.

Lleyton Hewitt (2001 and 2002) is the only Australian to win the tournament, while the last American to prevail was Pete Sampras in 1999.
