While all eyes are on the main event on Sunday, The Wolf is keen to get involved with the remainder of the UFC 257 card as well, featuring New Zealand’s Dan Hooker welcoming Bellator veteran Michael Chandler to the promotion.
Be sure to check out The Wolf’s extended McGregor v Poirier preview for the main event as well.
Before the main events, we are treated to what should be a competitive match up between two fighters who are hoping to stay relevant in the Women’s Flyweight division.
Jessica Eye is one of the stalwarts of this division, having been around since 2013. Her UFC career got off to a rocky start, losing 5 from her first 6 but then managed to string three wins together and receive a title shot against Valentina Shevchenko, in which she was knocked out in the 2nd round. Since then she has gone 1-1, taking Viviane Araujo to a Unanimous Decision victory and then dropping a decision to Cynthia Calvillo.
Joanne Calderwood has had a little more success in her UFC career, only really falling to the upper echelon in her division. She was most recently beaten by Jennifer Maia by Armbar in the 1st round, who went on to give Valentina Schevchenko her most competitive fight to date.
Both women will be desperate to win this fight, as the loser may find themselves cut from the roster. Neither possesses any real KO power, with both fighters only holding one win by KO/TKO in their UFC careers. Eye is more of a counter-striker, choosing to wait and pick her shots whereas Calderwood has a higher output and likes to pressure her opponents behind a jab and leg kicks.
The Wolf expects this one to stay standing for the majority of the fight and Jessica Eye has shown in the past that she doesn’t handle pressure well. Expect Calderwood to produce a higher work-rate and take a decision victory.
The winner of this fight should shoot up the 155lb rankings as the ultra-tough Kiwi, Dan Hooker takes on multiple time Bellator Champion, Michael Chandler.
Hooker is coming off a very competitive and tough fight against Dustin Poirier, who will fight Conor McGregor in the main event of this card. Previous to that, he has taken out big names such as Paul Felder and Al Iaquinta, using his long reach and knees to throw devastating striking combinations.
Michael Chandler has been thrown in the deep end for his UFC debut but he has proven on multiple occasions, he is a world class fighter. He most recently fought in August of last year, knocking out the super durable former UFC Lightweight Champion Benson Henderson in a tick over 2 minutes.
This should be an extremely exciting fight, likely to challenge for Fight of the Night honours. Two extremely tough fighters who can both pack a punch (and are usually very willing too). The Wolf is giving the slight edge to Hooker due to his reach and the fact he was so competitive against Dustin Poirier. This is a decent jump up in class for Chandler and The Wolf is tipping for Hooker to catch up with a right hand or a step-in knee at some point and put an end to proceedings.
This is a fight between two interesting 115lb prospects but the hype is very real regarding Amanda Ribas. She has rattled off four successive wins in the Octagon since June 2019, even managing to outwork and grapple a very accomplished grappler in Mackenzie Dern.
Marina Rodriguez has fought some tough competition since arriving in the UFC in 2018. She holds wins over Tecia Torres and Jessica Aguilar and recently lost a split decision over Carla Esparza.
They both have a common opponent, with Rodriguez fighting Randa Markos to a Draw in September 2018 however Ribas took Markos down repeatedly and comfortably handled her on the ground.
Ribas looks like she should be able to get this fight on the mat whenever she pleases and it should only be a matter of time before she locks up a choke or an armbar.
Ribas, Calderwood and Hooker all to win ($4.02)
