The second week of Champions League knockout round matches continues on Wednesday and Thursday, with two more Premier League teams involved tomorrow.
Wednesday morning begins with Lazio hosting title holders Bayern Munich, who have won an unbelievable 16 of their last 17 Champions League matches.
Meanwhile, Thomas Tuchel, who took PSG to the final last season, returns with his new club Chelsea and face a tricky matchup with Atletico Madrid.
There’s also a Premier League makeup match from Week 18, with Leeds hosting Southampton.
Lazio are into the knockout stages for the first time since 2000 and their reward is a matchup with the defending champs. Bayern are struggling slightly in the Bundesliga, now on top by just two points and coming off a draw and a loss. They are also missing some key players (Pavard, Gnabry) but should still have enough quality to come away with a win, even against a very good Serie A team.
Thomas Tuchel and Chelsea travel to Bucharest for this one and they face one of the toughest ‘outs’ in all of European football. Atletico have reached two Champions League and three Europa League finals in the last 11 seasons and their record in two-legged knockout contests against English teams is 11-2. Atletico, however, are winless in their last two La Liga matches while Chelsea haven’t lost since Tuchel took over a little more than a month ago.
Two mid-table clubs play a makeup game from Week 18 and it’s hard to believe that Southampton were once on top of the table. They’ve taken a paltry 14 points from their last 16 matches and are the second-worst performing team over the last 10 games. A win here, however, would see the Saints leapfrog over Leeds, who have two wins and three losses in their last five.
