The Wolf’s best bet looks primed to win over 2400m at Caulfield. Here my best bets for Wednesday racing.

Saracen Knight was an outstanding winner at just his second run back in almost two years last time out at Caulfield. In a race run at a strong tempo, he came from an almost impossible position around to home turn to fly over his rivals late. The form out of that race has stood up well and getting out to 2400m – a trip he won over in Ireland – should only make for improvement. Look for Damian Lane to position him back of midfield once again and come home over the top.

Easifar covered so much ground on debut at Randwick – Kensington that should probably would have been closer to the front bar of the Doncaster Hotel than she was to the running rail but despite the torrid run, she stuck on gamely to go down about a long head. That looked a strong maiden so there was plenty of merit to the performance. Look for James McDonald to position her better from barrier three.

Recommended Price: $1.80
Confidence Level: 4/5

Django Freeman is looking to force his way into the Caulfield Cup field by winning this race and he should get his chance to do so. The Robert Hickmott trained gelding drops significantly in class from the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes last start where he was beaten less than three lengths. From barrier five, he draws to get a much better run than favourite and key rival Al Galayel. Third up, there are no excuses and he should be ready to record his first Australian win.

Recommended Price: $4.00
Confidence Level: 3.5/5

The Velvet King is a quality addition to the Peter Moody stable and if the master trainer can get him to find his best form, or even improve on it, he should take plenty of beating here. A seven-time winner from twenty starts, he flies fresh with two wins and three seconds from five first up starts, and his jumpout at Pakenham a fortnight ago was a pointer to a good first up run. The five-year-old’s form around Perfect Jewel and Vega Magic suggests he should be more than up to this level and if Luke Nolen can obtain some cover from the wide draw, he should be right in the finish.

Recommended Price: $6.00

Chaillot was absolutely outstanding on her racetrack return three weeks ago at Flemington, coming from last with a devastating turn of speed to win in the last stride. She has always shown a stack of ability dating back to her two-year-old days, having won in Listed company at just her second start. She had some subsequent injury problems but has proven to be well and truly over them. From barrier three she can be cleaner away from the barriers and sit a little closer in the run. No matter where she is if she produces the same acceleration as she did last time she will take a power of beating.

Recommended Price: $5.00
Confidence Level: 4/5

Legionnaire should be at peak fitness fourth up and should get his chance to break through for a much deserved win on his home track. All three runs this time in have been excellent, with form around subsequent winners including Ancestry and Groundswell. Ideally drawn over a course where it is a significant advantage, Daniel Stackhouse should position him just off the leaders and be strong late.
