If you’ve been in a lockdown bubble with the kids, chances are you’ve done a lifetime’s worth of Lego building over the past couple of months. But that’s not stopped the second season of Lego Masters Australia from crushing the opposition in the television ratings.

Punters have jumped on board too, as Sportsbet’s novelty markets fill the breach during the COVID-19 sports hiatus.

The Lego Masters Grand Finale Week gets underway at 7pm (AEST) on Sunday, 17 May – see how the Lego Masters odds and futures market shapes up with four teams still vying for the title.

LEGO MASTERS 2020 SO FAR

Eight teams set out on a quest to become the second Australian Lego Masters champions, pitting their creativity and technical know-how against one another across a range of fascinating challenges. Ryan ‘The Brickman’ McNaught judges each challenge on the Hamish Blake–hosted show, which premiered its second season on 19 April.

Forty-something best mates Damian and Andrew, and teenage best friends Summer and Iona took out the first two challenges. Pre-season favourites Jackson and Alex chalked up a victory in challenge 3, Fairytale, which saw Annie and Runa become the first team eliminated.

Summer and Iona spilled their lollies with a piñata design to exit after challenge 4, which was won by Jay and Stani – who were subsequently the next pair eliminated. Their ‘New York love scene’ creation received no love from Brickman in challenge 6, and they then they lost an elimination challenge against Jennifer and Jodie.

Jennifer and Jodie’s luck ran out after losses in challenges 7 (after which they survived the elimination challenge) and 9, becoming the last team to be bounced before Lego Masters 2020 Grand Finale Week.

AND THEN THERE WERE FOUR

The top three pre-season Lego Masters betting favourites have progressed to the Sunday night’s decider, along with a dark-horse threat.

Jackson and Alex

Visual artist Jackson and environmental engineer Alex were backed into $2.25 favouritism before Lego Masters 2020 got underway. The 29-year-olds’ penchant for thinking outside the box and their ability to execute their left-field ideas have been highlights of the season.

They bagged their first win with a Hansel and Gretel witch’s house design in the Fairytale challenge and chalked up another victory in challenge 7, Above & Below, with a spectacular 1950s worm-attack creation.

Jackson and Alex’s talents have seen them firm into $1.25 to build their way to Lego Masters glory in the Grand Finale at the time of writing.

Damian and Andrew

The Queenslanders began with a bang, with their ‘Isle of Eyes’ cave effort in the season-opening A Whole New World getting the nod from Brickman. They also won the feverishly anticipated Star Wars–themed challenge 8 courtesy of their bounty hunter ship – a valuable result that gave them immunity and a guaranteed place in the Grand Finale.

The oldest duo left in the competition by quite a margin, Damian and Andrew are on the second line of Lego Masters betting at $3.50, easing off slightly from their $3.25 opening price but earning plenty of support in Lego Masters tips.

Trent and Josh

Trent (38, accountant) and Josh (27, primary school chaplain) were $5.50 smokies at the start of the season, but they have emerged as a genuine chance at snaring the Lego Masters champions tag as a result of some strong performances.

The kooky combo won the One Hanging Brick elimination challenge with a ‘cats vs bird cage’ design and saluted again a week later in challenge 6 (3D Art), labouring over their successful ‘cowboy riding a bucking bull’ concept for 12 hours.

They warmed up for the Grand Finale with an eye-catching ‘diver fights sea creature’ build in last week’s Underwater challenge and have been backed into $4 to take out the title on Sunday.

Dannii and Tim

The sole married couple in the competition, Dannii and Tim were rated a $4 chance at the start of the season. The 25-year-old high school sweethearts look strong value at $5.50 underdogs to win the Grand Finale.

Their popcorn box design was the winner in the Make & Shake challenge, while they ensured a place in the last four with a ‘diver fights octopus’ design in the Underwater challenge last week – a great-minds-think-alike coincidence with Trent and Josh.

If the Lego Masters 2020 Grand Finale is anything like last year – when Henry and Cade triumphed with a Poseidon-themed build, featuring the god of the sea protecting a boat full of warriors from a giant serpent – daring and imagination will win the day. Each of the four remaining teams have displayed outstanding technical nous, but which pair will find the creative edge? One of the most year’s most popular TV shows and novelty markets will go down to the wire.
