It was a quiet Wednesday on the NBA front, but it’s a huge Thursday with a 10-game slate. The two best in the East face off in the 76ers and Celtics, but the man that’s caught The Wolf’s eye is the favourite for this season’s Most Improved Player and he features as my best for the day.
Have I missed something here? How could this man’s PR line only be 32.5? The Wolf hopes you followed his lead in the pre-season and backed Christian Wood for the Most Improved Player at $13, as the man is now into $1.83 for the award.
Wood averages 23.8 points and 10.7 rebounds this season at his new home in Houston, and he doesn’t look like he’s slowing down.
Victor Oladipo played his first game for the Rockets against Chicago, with the former Pacer having a huge game with 32 points and 9 assists – but it didn’t slow down Wood. In fact, it appears it helped him.
Wood had his second highest scoring game for the season with 30 to go with 9 rebounds, with the chemistry with Oladipo apparent – he was on the end of 7 of Oladipo’s 9 assists.
The big man has cleared 32.5 PR in seven of 11 games this season and gets a nice look at Deandre Ayton and the Phoenix Suns in this. Centres against the Suns over the last month are scoring points 9% above average plus rebounding 10% above average, making Phoenix the eighth easiest team for Centres to score against in the NBA over this period, and the fourth easiest to rebound against – all this despite Phoenix being the NBA’s fifth best defensive team.
Expect the Suns to limit Oladipo’s scoring output, but there will be no slowing down Christian Wood who could quite easily post a PR of 40.
Top of the East clash between the Celtics and 76ers with Philadelphia red-hot favourites back to full strength, while Boston will still be without Jayson Tatum. One thing is for sure, we can expect this to be a statement game which means plenty of minutes for starters.
After being required to postpone a few games due to health protocols, Boston has been involved in two blowouts – firstly smashing the Magic, followed by being pumped by the Knicks. As a result, Boston’s two main men Marcus Smart and Jaylen Brown have only played around 28-29 minutes per game since returning. Expect Brad Stevens to unleash them against the 76ers.
Marcus Smart’s assist numbers have been down slightly since returning, only having 2 in both games which now provides the punters the value to have 6+ against Philadelphia.
I’m expecting Smart to play around 34-36 minutes with Kemba still on a minutes restriction, with Smart’s per 36 mins assist numbers this season sitting at 6.2 per game. He’s played 30+ minutes in 8 of his 11 games this season, and in those eight games he averages 6.75 assists – producing 6+ in six of those eight.
Likely to play more in the off-guard spot, over the last month the 76ers are the fifth easiest team for shooting guards to produce assists against, 12% above average. Expect a bounce back game from Marcus Smart in this Eastern Conference showdown.
