The Randwick Guineas 2014 is one of Sydney’s most prized autumn fixtures, the Group 1 over 1600m, is run under set weight conditions for three-year-olds, and offers $600,000 in prize money. The nation’s top milers will make up the field, in an attempt to replicate the gutsy effort of 2013 champion It’s A Dundeel.

Facts about the Randwick Guineas
- Mosheen, in 2012, became the first filly to win the Guineas in its current form at Randwick.
- A set weight race, fillies carry 54.5kg, while colts and gelding carry 56.5kg.
Originally a principal race over nine furlongs (1800m), the Randwick Guineas debuted at Canterbury Park Racecourse, Sydney in 1935 as the Canterbury Guineas. The race has undergone various changes since; most notable was its elevation to the distinguished status of a Group 1 fixture in 1980. As the race name suggests, Sydney’s esteemed Royal Randwick Racecourse is the permanent home to this autumn gem, and has been since 2006.
Conducted by the Australian Jockey Club (AJC), and producing top-class milers over the years, the Randwick Guineas is the first instalment of the Triple Crown for three-year-olds. The 2000m Rosehill Guineas and the 2400m Australian Derby complete the three-race series.

Randwick Racecourse, or “Headquarters” as the locals call it, is located in the Eastern suburbs around 5 kilometres from the Sydney’s CBD. It is also known as “Royal Randwick”, Queen Elizabeth granted this title in 1992.
Randwick racecourse was first raced on in 1833, it is governed by the AJC and it is considered to be the premier metropolitan course in Sydney, and hosts major carnivals in both the autumn and spring. The first meeting under the AJC was held on January 27th, 1925 with 25,000 people in attendance.
Randwick has multiple racetracks, which consist of the Course Proper and the Kensington Track. With a Circumference of 2,224 metres and a straight consisting of 410 metres, the Course Proper is New South Wales’ largest track. The slightly smaller Kensington track has a circumference of 2,100 metres with a 401 metre straight. Randwick has also a Bullring and Equine pool.
The renowned Randwick Racecourse has even featured in numerous films, including Mission: Impossible 2.
Most Successful at the Randwick Guineas
An important Autumn event, the Randwick Guineas has been won by a collection of quality milers. Weekend Hustler claimed line honours in 2008, following in the well-shod hooves of nineties champion Octagonal (1996). Octagonal went on that autumn to win the Triple Crown: Randwick Guineas – Rosehill Guineas – Australian Derby.
As for navigating greatness, Danny Nikolic has that covered. Nikolic became the first jockey to win two Randwick Guineas after his win on Metal Bender in 2009 and masterful ride on Mosheen in 2012.
