Black Caviar Lightning Stakes
Flemington | 1000m | Group 1 | Weight-for-age | $750,000Saturday, 20th February 2016
It’s fair to say that Black Caviar owned the Lightning Stakes at the peak of her magnificent career. Racing officials certainly seemed to think so, because they re-named it after her in 2013 while she was still running! What was called the Lightning Stakes for over 50 years is now known as the Black Caviar Lightning. So, even though you’ll never again see her name in a racing field, you can remember the greatest sprinter the world has ever seen when you’re scanning future Lightning Stakes odds.
The Black Cavier Lightning is a weight-for-age sprint over 1000m, staged in February at Flemington. Since 1987, it has been Australia’s only Group 1 over that length, and is the first leg of Melbourne’s prestigious (and lucrative) autumn sprint series – the other two being the Oakleigh Plate over 1100m and the Newmarket Handicap over 1200m. It generally attracts a quality field of sprinters and has been taken out in the past by quality horses like: Todman, Sky High, Schillaci, Mahogany, Takeover Target and Miss Andretti.
